The critical measurement is the inside diameter of the existing liner, not the outside. A 6″ nominal Copperfield liner measures 5.875″ ID on the 316Ti stainless series and 6.125″ ID on the 304 alloy series. Mixing these up means the new liner either won’t seat properly or leaves a dangerous gap at the appliance collar. Here’s what you can safely check yourself: look up the flue from the firebox with a flashlight for visible gaps or debris, and verify your Carbon Monoxide detector is less than seven years old with a test button that actually responds.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong. Flue liner replacement requires working at roof height with full-body harness rigging, dropping a liner down a shaft that may contain unstable terra cotta, and achieving a proper seal at the appliance collar. A liner that seats even half an inch high leaks exhaust at the thimble. A liner pulled too tight cracks at the bend. And if you’re working with a gas appliance, you’re handling Category I venting where improper slope or connection can pressurize the system and dump CO into wall cavities.
