A Emberly company - serving Bellevue, WA

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Bellevue Owner’s Guide

We stock and install HeatShield-compatible chimney cap assemblies in Bellevue, with most jobs running $340-$620 installed depending on flue diameter, chase height, and whether the chase cover itself needs resealing. Same-day installation is available when you call before noon, and we carry the common HeatShield sizes on every truck. Most Bellevue owners discover their cap has failed after finding water stains on the firebox floor, hearing metal rattling during windstorms off Lake Washington, or noticing rust streaks running down the chimney chase after our wet winters.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield caps break down into two product families: the standard galvanized line and the stainless Pro-Series. The galvanized units carry a 7-year warranty and typically show part numbers starting with HS-GV followed by the flue diameter; the Pro-Series uses HS-SS prefixes and carries a lifetime warranty against corrosion. We see the HS-SS-813 and HS-SS-1013 most often in Bellevue, matching 8-inch and 10-inch round flues common in homes built between 1985 and 2010.

To identify your cap, check the stamped model number on the underside of the lid or measure the flue opening directly. HeatShield caps are not cross-compatible with Gelco or DuraFlex mounting brackets; the bolt pattern and tension-band width differ by about 3/16 inch, which is enough to cause gaps. We source OEM HeatShield hardware through Haven’s buying network, though we also stock stainless aftermarket equivalents from Olympia Chimney when the lead time on genuine HeatShield runs long. For Bellevue’s salt-air exposure near the lake, we typically recommend the Pro-Series stainless even when the original was galvanized; the upcharge is usually $80-$120 and pays for itself in years without rust.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Rust streaks down the chimney chase. HeatShield galvanized caps begin showing surface oxidation after 5-7 years in Western Washington’s marine climate. The rust runs down the chase siding and stains brick or stucco; by the time you see it from the ground, the cap’s base flange is often thinning.
  • Water in the firebox after heavy rain. A warped or wind-loosened cap lid lets water track down the flue liner. In Bellevue’s Lakemont neighborhood, where homes sit exposed on the hillside, we’ve found caps lifted partially off their mounts by wind gusts coming off the lake.
  • Metal rattling or clanking during storms. The HeatShield tension band loosens as the mounting bolts back out from thermal cycling. The lid shifts in wind and strikes the flue edge; left alone, it can deform the cap skirt or crack the flue tile beneath it.
  • Animals or nesting debris visible from below. A missing or damaged mesh screen on the cap body lets squirrels, raccoons, and starlings enter the flue. We pulled a nest from a Bridle Trails home last March where the cap mesh had corroded through at the weld points.
  • Soot or smoke smell inside the home when the fireplace is not in use. A cap that no longer seats squarely creates downdraft paths. Cold air drops the flue, carrying creosote odor into the living space; this is especially noticeable in two-story homes with exterior chimneys.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Component Price Range (Bellevue)
HeatShield cap assembly, standard galvanized $180-$260
HeatShield Pro-Series stainless cap $260-$380
Labor: removal, fit, seal, and documentation $160-$240
Chase cover resealing (if needed) $80-$140
Typical total installed $340-$620

What drives the range: flue diameter (larger caps cost more and take longer to seal properly), chase height (two-story work requires taller ladders and a second technician for safety), and the condition of the existing sealant at the chase cover penetration. We quote every job in writing before work starts, per Haven Standard Clause 1. The price you sign is the price you pay. Every cap installation includes a camera scan of the flue from the firebox to the new cap, photos of the completed work, and a written warranty card. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies; if it leaks, rattles, or fails, we make it right.

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check your cap from the ground with binoculars: look for tilt, missing mesh, or rust streaks. You can measure your flue diameter from inside the firebox with a tape measure to confirm which HeatShield size you need. But installing a chimney cap requires working at height on a roof surface that is often wet, mossy, or steep-pitched; the fall risk is real, and a dropped cap can damage roofing or gutters. More importantly, an improperly sealed cap voids the manufacturer’s warranty and channels water into the chase wall, where it rots framing silently. We carry the full range of HeatShield sizes on our Bellevue trucks, and most swaps take under 90 minutes. Call (425) 696-0387 and we’ll give you a written price before we schedule.
